Butch is Christy's ex-boyfriend and the biological father of Violet who never appeared in the series.
Initially, Christy perceived Butch as "a cool guy," so much so that she was incredulous that he had any interest in her. Their first few months together were enjoyable and carefree. However, one night, while they were doing tequila shots with his friends, Butch entered the room to announce the passing of "Kirk" Cobain. He mispronounced the name, and Christy corrected him, saying, "No genius, it's Kurt with a T." This correction elicited laughter from his friends.
Once they were alone in the car, Butch began yelling at Christy for embarrassing him. Christy, unable to fathom his reaction, thought he was joking and laughed. This provoked Butch to strike her so forcefully across the face that she heard ringing in her ears. This incident marked the beginning of the abusive nature of their relationship.
